Buying a Yacht, Classic Car or Other High-Value Asset Abroad
International payments are not limited to property. Yachts, classic cars, fine art, specialist machinery and other high-value assets can create the same combination of currency exposure, fraud risk and strict delivery deadlines—often with additional shipping and ownership checks.
Confirm the asset and seller
Use appropriate independent specialists to verify title, ownership, condition, serial or hull numbers, liens and the seller’s authority to transact. The expertise required differs by asset: a marine surveyor, vehicle inspector, art adviser or machinery engineer may be necessary.
Currency execution should follow—not replace—commercial and legal due diligence.
Define the full landed cost
Add inspection, escrow, transport, marine freight, insurance, customs duties, import VAT or sales taxes, registration and professional fees. These may be due in more than one currency.
Clarify the agreed Incoterms or delivery responsibilities for commercial goods and machinery. A low purchase price can become expensive if shipping and import obligations are misunderstood.
Protect staged payments
High-value assets often involve a holding deposit, conditional balance and delivery payment. The contract should state when each sum becomes non-refundable, what evidence triggers release and what happens if inspection fails.
Consider reputable escrow arrangements where appropriate and have the structure reviewed independently.
Manage the currency exposure
Once the purchase price and timetable are sufficiently certain, decide whether to convert immediately, stage the requirement or secure a future rate. A delay in inspection or shipping can affect the suitable settlement window.
Avoid booking a binding currency contract before understanding what happens if the underlying purchase is cancelled.
Verify every payment instruction
Fraudsters target brokers, dealerships and shipping chains. Confirm beneficiary details directly with a known contact and question any last-minute request to pay a different company or country.
