How to Transfer a Large Sum of Money Abroad: A Due-Diligence Guide
A six-figure international payment deserves a different process from an everyday bank transfer. The financial impact of a poor exchange rate is larger, compliance checks are more detailed and an error in beneficiary details can be extremely difficult to reverse.
Verify who provides the payment service
Establish the legal entity executing the payment, the regulator responsible for it and how client funds are safeguarded. A broker or introducer may work with regulated payment partners, so distinguish the customer-facing firm from the entity holding or transmitting money.
Check regulatory details independently on the relevant official register rather than relying solely on a logo or statement.
Compare the complete exchange outcome
Ask each provider for a like-for-like quote at as close to the same time as practical. Compare the foreign-currency amount expected to reach the recipient after provider charges, and ask whether intermediary or recipient-bank fees may apply.
On a large payment, a small difference in the rate can outweigh a visible transfer fee.
Prepare source-of-funds evidence
Common evidence includes bank statements, sale completion statements, payslips, company accounts, investment statements, probate documents, loan agreements or gift letters. Requirements depend on the transaction and risk assessment.
Do not split a payment to avoid checks. That can create more questions and may delay the transfer.
Use strong beneficiary controls
Confirm the account name, number or IBAN, bank identifier and payment reference with the recipient through a trusted channel. Be suspicious of urgency, secrecy or changed instructions.
A small test transfer can help identify basic errors, although it does not replace full verification.
Agree the timing and escalation route
Understand booking cut-offs, settlement requirements, expected delivery time and who to contact if the payment is delayed. Keep copies of the quote, trade confirmation and payment receipt.
Practical checklist
Regulated payment entity checked independently
Final delivered amount compared
Source and purpose documents ready
Beneficiary verified by two channels
Test payment considered
